ENIGMA OF STEAL - found VHS collage madnessFrom roughly 2007-2009 occupants of House 4541 in Seattle's University District produced a number of experimental videos, primarily constructed from found footage vhs tapes. Several vcr's and multiple audio sources were played simotaneously. Switch boxes were used to cut between the various vcrs, and to overlay audio from one source over the imagery from another. All of the vcrs and audio components then ran out to a final vcr, which would record the results of a session. Some videos produced at this time were carefully constructed from various sources. Other times, the vcrs were simply let to run, as random tapes were inserted on the whim of the player. 'Enigma of Steal' resulted from a continuous, probably two hour session. The main, continuing theme of this video is provided by Conan the Barbarian (1982) and its soundtrack by Basil Poledouris. The title of this work was taken from this movie as well. Many countless other bits and pieces of audio and video from a variety of sources were interjected into this film, confusing and recontextualizing its content. Participants or players which took part in the original vhs session that went on to become The Enigma of Steal included: Bryan (the brain) Auger, Crystal Perez, James Nielsen and Jason Goldsbury. Some time after the original vhs tape was recorded, this was converted to digital by James Nielsen, and edited into its current form. It should be noted that this video was a result of both the original real-time in vcr editing, and later digital manipulation. While the original recording ran for the entire length of Conan The Barbarian, presented is a shortened, somewhat more tolerable 34 minute version.
